What Modalius Does
Modalius is a data exchange platform that connects you with your trading partners through secure, automated file transfers. While many of our customers use traditional EDI formats (X12, EDIFACT), Modalius handles any file type your business needs:
- EDI (X12, EDIFACT) - Standard electronic data interchange formats used across industries
- CSV & Excel - Spreadsheet-based data files for flexible data exchange
- XML & JSON - Structured data formats commonly used with APIs and modern integrations
- Flat files & other formats - Plain text, fixed-width, and any other file type your partners require
Files are exchanged through secure connections: SFTP, AS2, or API, with full tracking, error handling, and delivery confirmation at every step.
Key Concepts
Partners: Other organizations you exchange files with - customers, vendors, carriers, warehouses, or any other business relationship.
Business Units: Your company’s trading identities used to send and receive files. You may have multiple business units for different divisions, locations, or purposes.
Files: The documents you exchange with partners - EDI transactions, spreadsheets, data feeds, or any other file type. Each file is tracked through its complete lifecycle from receipt to delivery.
Orders: Groups of related files tracking a business process from start to finish, including location events and status updates.
Connections: The secure methods used to transfer files with Modalius - SFTP (secure file transfer), AS2 (EDI-specific protocol), or API (web services).

Security
Modalius supports Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to help protect your account. MFA adds a second verification step during login, either a code sent to your email or a code from an authenticator app. Your organization may require MFA for all users. You can manage your MFA settings from your user profile.
