To exchange EDI files with another organization, you must first establish a partner relationship between your Business Units. This guide walks you through the process of requesting a new connection.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have:
- A Business Unit set up under your organization (your sending/receiving identity)
- Permission to manage partner relationships
- The partner must have a discoverable Business Unit in Modalius, or you need their Business Unit public ID
Step 1: Open the Request Dialog
- Navigate to Partners in the main menu
- Click Request a Partner Relationship
Step 2: Select Your Business Unit
Choose which of your organization's Business Units will initiate the relationship. This is the Business Unit that will exchange EDI files with the partner.
Note: If your organization only has one Business Unit, it will be selected automatically.
Step 3: Find the Partner Business Unit
- Search for the partner Business Unit by name or public ID
- Select the partner's Business Unit from the search results
- If the partner is not listed, you can enter their public ID directly
Note: Only Business Units marked as "discoverable" will appear in search results. If you cannot find a partner, they may have discoverability disabled. Contact them directly to coordinate the connection, or enter their public ID manually.
Step 4: Choose the Primary Party
Select which Business Unit will be the primary party in the relationship. You can designate either your own Business Unit or the partner's Business Unit as the primary party.
Step 5: Send the Request
Review the request summary and click Send Request.
What Happens Next
After you submit the request:
- The relationship status becomes Pending Response
- The partner receives a notification about your request
- They review and decide to accept or reject
- You will be notified of their decision
- If accepted, the relationship becomes Accepted and you can start exchanging files
Requesting a Partner Not Yet on Modalius
If the organization you want to connect with is not yet on Modalius, you can submit a partner setup request. This allows you to provide the partner's company name, contact information, and an optional message to start the onboarding process.
You can also upload supporting documents with your request, such as trading partner agreements, EDI implementation guides, or onboarding forms. Supported file types include PDF, Word, Excel, and image files.
Tip: Uploading relevant documents with your partner setup request helps speed up the onboarding process by providing all the necessary information upfront.
Tracking Your Requests
View your pending requests in the Partners page. For each request, you can see:
- Partner Business Unit name and logo
- Your Business Unit in the relationship
- Current status (Pending Response, Accepted, Rejected, or Revoked)
Cancelling a Pending Request
If you need to cancel a request before the partner responds:
- Navigate to Partners
- Click on the pending relationship
- Click Revoke
- The status changes to Revoked
You can submit a new request to the same partner after revoking.
If You Cannot Find a Partner
If the partner does not appear in search:
- They may not have enabled discoverability on their Business Unit
- Their Business Unit name might be spelled differently than expected
- They may not be on Modalius yet - use the partner setup request to begin onboarding them
You can also enter the partner's public ID directly if you have it, or contact them to verify their Modalius Business Unit details.
