If you encounter "Permission Denied" or access errors in Modalius, this guide explains the causes and how to resolve them.
Why Permission Errors Occur
Permission errors happen when your user account doesn't have the required access to perform an action. This could be due to:
- Your role doesn't include the necessary permission
- You're not assigned to the relevant business unit
- The resource belongs to a different organization
Common Permission Scenarios
Cannot View a File
Error: You don't have permission to view this file
Cause: You don't have access to the sender or receiver business unit for this file.
Solution: Ask your administrator to assign you to the relevant business unit(s).
Access rules by role:
- Admin: Can view files for any business unit they have access to (sender, receiver, or owning partner)
- Manager: Can view files for business units within their partner organization
- User: Can only view files for business units they're directly assigned to
Cannot Modify Settings
Error: You cannot modify this setting
Cause: Certain settings require Manager or Admin role.
Solution: Contact a Manager or Admin to make the change for you, or request a role upgrade if appropriate.
Cannot Access Business Unit
Error: Access denied to this business unit
Cause: You haven't been assigned access to this specific business unit.
Solution: Request business unit access from your administrator.
Cannot Manage Users
Error: You don't have permission to manage users
Cause: Only Admins and Managers can add, remove, or modify user accounts.
Solution: Contact an Admin or Manager to perform user management tasks.

Requesting Access
If you need access that you don't currently have:
- Identify what you're trying to do and what access you need
- Contact your organization's Modalius administrator
- Explain why you need the access (business justification)
- Wait for the administrator to update your permissions
For Administrators
To grant a user access:
- Navigate to Users
- Find and click on the user
- To add business unit access: Add them to the appropriate business unit(s)
- To change role: Update their role to Manager or Admin if needed
- Save changes
Best Practice: Follow the principle of least privilege - only grant the minimum access needed for users to perform their job functions.
