Common questions about trading partners in Modalius.
What's the difference between a Partner and a Business Unit?
Partner - An organization you do business with. Partners are companies, vendors, carriers, or other trading relationships.
Business Unit - A specific trading identity within an organization. One partner may have multiple business units (e.g., different divisions or locations). You connect YOUR business unit to a PARTNER'S business unit.
How do I find a partner?
Go to Partners and click Request Partnership. Search by name. If you can't find them, they may have discoverability disabled - contact them directly and ask them to send you a request instead.
How long do partner requests take?
That depends on the partner. They need to log in and accept your request. You'll be notified when they respond. Requests remain pending until accepted or rejected.
What happens when I accept a partner request?
When you accept:
- The relationship becomes active immediately
- You can begin exchanging EDI files with that partner
- The requesting party is notified
- The partner appears in your active partnerships list
Can I reconnect with a previous partner?
Yes. If a relationship was ended, you can send a new partnership request. They'll need to accept it to reestablish the relationship.
Can I have multiple relationships with the same partner?
Yes, if you both have multiple business units. Each business-unit-to-business-unit connection is a separate relationship. This is common when partners have business units for different divisions or locations.
Which business unit should I use?
When requesting a partnership, select the business unit from your organization that will be exchanging EDI files with the partner. If you have multiple business units, choose the one most relevant to the trading relationship - for example, the division or location that handles the specific EDI transactions.
How do I end a partner relationship?
Go to Partners, find the active partnership, and select End Relationship or Revoke. This stops file exchange immediately. The partnership status changes to "Revoked".
Will my partner know if I end the relationship?
They'll see the relationship status change on their end (it will show as "Revoked"), but they don't receive an automatic notification. Communicate directly if appropriate.
What if a partner rejects my request?
Contact them directly to understand why. They may have made a mistake, or there may be a business reason. You can send another request after discussing with them.
What are the partnership statuses?
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Initiated | Request sent, waiting for response |
| Accepted | Active partnership - can exchange files |
| Rejected | Request was declined |
| Revoked | Relationship was ended by one party |
How does business unit discoverability work?
Discoverability is a setting on each business unit that controls whether other partners can find it when searching for new relationships.
- Only business units belonging to billable partners can be set as discoverable
- Managers can enable or disable discoverability for each business unit under Organization > Business Units
- Partners can also selectively allow specific organizations to discover their business units, even if general discoverability is off
