Common questions about business units in Modalius.
What is a Business Unit?
A business unit is your organization's trading identity in Modalius. When you send or receive EDI files, you do so through a business unit. One organization can have multiple business units for different divisions, locations, or operational needs.
How many business units can I create?
There's no hard limit on business units. Create as many as you need to organize your trading relationships. Contact support if you have questions about your plan.
Can I rename my business unit?
Display Name - Yes, you can change this at any time. This is what partners see when they search for you.
Public ID - This typically shouldn't be changed after setup, as partners reference it in their EDI transactions.
What is discoverability?
When discoverability is enabled, other Modalius users can find your business unit when searching for partners. With it disabled, you can only connect through direct invitation or by having them send you a request first.
Can I delete a business unit?
Business units with historical file data are typically deactivated rather than deleted to preserve records. Contact support to discuss business unit deletion.
Note: You cannot delete a business unit that has files currently being processed. All in-flight files must complete first.
What happens to files if I deactivate a business unit?
Historical files remain accessible for viewing. New files cannot be sent to or from a deactivated business unit. The business unit's file history is preserved.
What SFTP credentials are created with a new business unit?
When you create a business unit, SFTP credentials are automatically generated. These allow files to be delivered to your business unit via SFTP. You can view the server address, username, and password in the business unit's SFTP Credentials section.
Can I customize how transaction types are labeled?
Yes. You can create custom labels for transaction types (like calling a "204" a "Shipment Request"). Labels can be set at the organization level or customized per partner. Partner-specific labels override organization labels.
What are the business unit settings I can configure?
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Display Name | How partners see your business unit |
| Public ID | Unique identifier used in EDI transactions |
| Discoverable | Whether others can find you in partner search |
| SFTP Delivery | Where incoming files are delivered |
| Duplicate Handling | How duplicate files are processed (add suffix/overwrite/reject) |
| Logo | Business unit logo displayed to partners |
Who can create and manage business units?
You need Manager or Admin permissions to create and manage business units. Standard users can only access business units they've been assigned to.
